This Learn to Cook section has been put together to help give you the information and knowledge needed, to develop the confidence and basic skills required to begin making more recipes and meals at home from scratch for you and your family.

Being able to cook from scratch at home is THE single biggest positive and lasting change we can make to our diets and overall lifestyles. It gives us control over what goes into our meals, saves money and provides one of the most important life skills that we can pass onto our children, other family members and friends. Once we have mastered the basics of preparing and cooking simple ingredients, we can start to adapt, add to and experiment with countless numbers of recipes.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium free-range egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable (rapeseed) oil

Utensils

  • Non-stick frying pan
  • Spatula

Method

Step 1

Place a non-stick frying pan over a low-medium heat and add a teaspoon of the oil.

Step 2

Once the oil is heated enough (around 10-20 seconds) carefully break the egg into the hot oil.

Step 3

If it starts to bubble and spit a lot turn down the heat.

Step 4

While it's frying, scoop up some of the oil now and then with the spatula or a teaspoon pouring (basting) it over the yolk.

Step 5

Continue to fry until the white is set and the yolk is covered with a white film and cooked to your liking.

Step 6

When ready, turn off the heat and remove from the pan onto a warm plate, or directly onto a roll or slice of toast, however you are serving it.
